Castello Di Amorosa – Napa Valley Family Trip

My mom, who is visiting from Puerto Rico, just turned 76 years old and we wanted to do something special to celebrate. My sister’s mother in law is visiting from Pennsylvania too, and they both love wine! So we decided to make a family road trip to Castello di Amorosa in Napa Valley and we enjoyed it so much that we thought we’d share our experience.

Just the drive through Napa to get there is quite an amazing journey!

If you ever go to Napa, it’s a must to look for this sign and snap a photo.

Castello di Amorosa, is a 13th century inspired Tuscan castle and winery in the world famous Napa Valley. My sisters and I have been there before and decided it was the perfect destination for our family trip.

At the castle you can experience the tours, enjoy the food and tasting, do some shopping, and take awesome pictures all over the place.

There are two ways of experiencing Castello di Amorosa.

Self Guided Tours: With the General Admission you get a map of the winery for a self guided tour through the upper levels of the castle,  including the Main Tasting Bar and Knight’s Hall. It also includes wine tasting (and grape juice for the kids).  This is the option that my husband, daughters and I selected because children under 5 are not allowed to visit the lower levels of the castle.

It was perfect for us. We walked around at our own pace, explored the castle, and took some cool photos.

Later on we headed to the wine tasting area. My husband and I are not experienced wine drinkers and we have a sweet tooth. The awesome wine expert that assisted us, Kimberly, did an amazing job choosing six wines that she thought we would enjoy.

We loved them all and it was hard to decide which one was our favorite. At the end of the day, my favorite was Simpatica (which in Spanish means nice) while my husband’s favorite was Fantasia.

The cool thing is that while we enjoyed our wine tasting the girls were coloring pages in their own tiny table while enjoying their grape juice.

Another way to see the castle is with a Guided Tour. This is the option that the rest of my family chose.

With the guided tours you get access to the upper and the lower levels of the Castello, including the Torture Chamber, Armory, and The Grand Barrel Room.

Afterwards you get to enjoy a private tasting of six wines, including low production, high end Reserve Wines. In this tour you spend a little more than an hour walking around and another 45 minutes wine tasting.

While my family took the tour through the lower levels of the castle and did the wine tasting, we visited the shop where you can purchase not only wines but also souveniers and gifts.

Afterwards we went outside the castle to enjoy a huge bonus, a variety of animals, including sheeps, goats, chickens and dogs among others. We also enjoyed a picnic and took really nice pictures.

When we met my family again they were very happy with their experience. They even bought a couple of bottles of wine!

It was a fun trip for kids and adults! Fully recommended.

Castello Di Amorosa is open seven days a week from 9:30am-6:00pm March-October and 9:30am-5:00pm November-February.

After our visit to Castello di Amorosa we decided to walk around the St. Helena area and had a late lunch at Market St. Helena Restaurant. Check our review! You might want to give it a try.

  1. I highly enjoyed the Castello di Amorosa and Napa Valley overall experience. Beautiful views during our way to it! My sister remarked is better to visit it on you own than tour guided for a more enjoyable experience.
