San Diego Family Vacation: Legoland

Legoland figure

When planning our trip to San Diego I was wondering if driving to Legoland was really worth it.

In other theme parks, we struggled to find attractions where both of my girls would be allowed to ride. A close friend visited this park with his daughters and strongly recommended us to go. I followed his advice and I’m so glad I did!

Family excited to be at Legoland

The Go San Diego card included a one day pass to both the Legoland Park and either the Legoland Water Park or the Sea Life Aquarium. On Day 2 of our San Diego family vacation, we chose the park and the aquarium.

Right away I’m gonna give you my first tip: Don’t even try! You’ll need one full day for each park if you really want to enjoy them. We didn’t make it to the aquarium.

Since we visited the Monterey Bay Aquarium recently we prioritized and decided to focus on the park.

This is, hands down, one of the best amusement parks for little kids. It is perfectly designed with lots of rides and attractions for my kids’ ages (soon to be 4 and 6) and height (40″ and 42″).

We usually plan our visits to this kind of park researching the requirements for each attraction and looking for things the four of us can do. If one of us isn’t allowed access then we just skip it. Then we grab a map, make a route, and follow it throughout the park. We also bring snacks and plan where we want to eat.

Since we already did the research we would like to share our insights so you don’t have to go through the hassle.

This is a list of the attractions we enjoyed the most with a little description of what they are about:

Coast Cruise

We started off hopping on this boat that took us around the world. We were impressed with all the views of the Taj Mahal, the Statue of Liberty, the Eiffel Tower, and lots of other international landmarks made out of tons of LEGO pieces.

Bettle Bounce

This ride has a height requirement of a minimum of 36″ and a maximum of 55″ to ride. Basically it bounces up and down, reaching 15 feet at its highest point. It looks simple but my girls had so much fun I can say it was one of their favorites! Oh! And they felt like big girls because they were able to ride by themselves.

Capitan Cranky’s Challenge

Both of my girls were able to ride since they were accompanied by an adult. This a pirate ship that sits on a “U-shaped” track and rotates in two directions. It’s pretty cool!

Tip: Make sure to grab your belongings after this and any other ride. When we entered the ship someone had left a cap in the seat. Probably took it off to precisely avoid losing it.

Cargo Ace

This is a short ride we’re young pilots can soar through the air in their planes. This is especially nice for toddlers!

Coastersaurus

This was actually fun for kids and adults! It’s a little roller coaster that goes two times around LEGO built dinosaurs.

Cole’s Rock Climb

This is a small rock climbing wall were the girls had a little fun while mom bought some beverages.

Dune Raiders

This is basically a six lane slide. I honestly can’t tell who enjoyed it the most, if the girls or me!

Junior Driving School

Here our girls were able to drive a car and pass the driving test. I’m glad they enjoyed it but I’m not looking forward to that happening in “real life”!

Lego City Deep Sea Adventure

Get inside a submarine and then participate in a scavenger hunt under the sea. One of the things I liked the most is how interactive this ride is!

LEGO Ninjago

This was super fun! It’s also an interactive ride where you throw virtual fireballs, lightning, and ice to defeat the Great Devourer and earn ninja status. You actually compete against those in your same unit. We loved it!

Lost Kingdom Adventure

This one is also interactive and we had a blast! Armed with laser blasters you shoot different kinds of targets. Super cool for little kids and grown-ups as well!

Splash Battle

This was my absolute favorite! You get into a boat and shoot water to spectators and to people in other boats. I got into this ride and my husband stayed outside to shoot pictures… we shoot water at him!!! Lol

Royal Joust

After having some interaction and taking pictures with knights the girls rode a horse in a little forest. This attraction is design for little kids and participants must be 4-12 years old.

Legoland Characters

The Dragon

This was another of my favorites! It’s a dragon-shaped roller coaster that goes indoors and outdoors. It’s the kind of ride you want to experience more than once. Note kids 40″-48″ need to ride with an adult.

All if this rides were perfect to enjoy as a family of four including our toddlers.

There are also plenty of restrooms and kid-friendly restaurants around the park for your convenience.

We especially recommend the Pizza and Pasta Buffet, an all-you-can-eat with refills for sodas included.

Additional Tips:

  • If you go during summer bring a swimsuit and a change of clothes for the kids. There’s a splash pad I think they will enjoy.
  • Have your camera/phone ready throughout the park. There are many LEGO-built characters and structures than provide great photo op spots.
  • Skip long lines by arriving before noon and starting in the back of the Park. Skip attractions that are super popular like Safari Trek, Coastersaurus, Fairy Tale Brook, and come back to those rides around 3 pm.
  • Kids 12 and under can visit LEGOLAND California Resort for FREE on their birthday. Available all year! Proof of birth date required.
  • Download the app! It comes handy, especially to see the waiting times for the rides!
  • Legoland is celebrating its 20th birthday with special events until Labor Day. Check their calendar!
  • Kids can bring mini-figures to trade or buy some at the park as well.
  • Parent Swap is for parents who have kids that meet and don’t meet the minimum height restriction, so both parents can enjoy the experience.
  • As I said, if one of us can’t ride a certain attraction we just skip it, but if you operate differently then this will be super convenient.
LEgoland photo opportunities

Our experience here was so great that we are planning on going back -maybe for a long weekend- stay at their resort and enjoy the water park, the aquarium, and the park again.

We hope this is useful if you’re planning a trip to San Diego with little kids. If you have questions about topics I didn’t cover just drop a comment and I’ll be happy to give my advice. If you have been to Legoland let me know how did you like it!

  1. You sure looked like you enjoyed every minute you were there. The kids were all smiles! We have not been there though. If we get a chance to visit San Diego, we’d make sure to spend a day there.
