15 Places That Will Make You Fall in Love With Copenhagen

Copenhagen is Denmark’s capital city and one of the best trips I’ve ever had in my life. It’s a beautiful city with rich history and amazing architecture. In this post we give you the scoop on 15 places that will make you fall in love with Copenhagen. Read along and get ready to book your next trip to this beautiful destination!

Tívoli Gardens

Tivoli Gardens is a historic well-kept amusement park and garden in the center of Copenhagen, Denmark. The park opened in 1843 and is the second-oldest operating amusement park in the world.

Tivoli is the most-visited theme park in Scandinavia, and the fifth most-visited theme park in Europe. It’s small compared to Disney parks but it has an old fashion charm that makes it unique.

It’s a great place for families as it has entertainment for kids and adults. If you like rides, comfort food and fun then Tívoli is definitely a must!

The Little Mermaid

Based on the fairy tale of the same name by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, The Little Mermaid is a small bronze statue by the waterside at the Langelinie promenade and it’s an absolute favorite Copenhagen icon!

Nyhavn

Nyhavn (New Harbour) is a 17th-century waterfront, canal and entertainment district in Copenhagen, Denmark. This is the perfect place to grab a beer since it has multiple bars. You can also enjoy a bite at one of the cafes and restaurants. The canal harbours many historical wooden ships.

What makes it unique is it’s colorful architecture and history, especially its townhouses. For example, the oldest house, at No. 9, dates from 1681 and No. 18, was home for famous author Hans Christian Andersen.

If you’re ever at Copenhagen you must stop by Nyhavn. Walk around or take a boat ride!

Christiansborg Castle

Located on the islet of Slotsholmen in central Copenhagen, in this stunning palace you will find the Danish Parliament, the Danish Prime Minister’s Office and the Supreme Court of Denmark. It is the only building in the world that houses all three of a country’s branches of government.

When visiting, make sure to get to the top of the tower for a wonderful view. Some people say that in a clear day you can see all the way to Sweden!

Børsen

Børsen is a 17th-century stock exchange in the center of Copenhagen. The historic building is a popular tourist attraction.

Børsen’s most interesting part is the spire, shaped as the tails of four dragons twined together. It’s nice to stop and snap a picture of the building but it’s not open for the public to visit inside.

Copenhagen City Hall Square

Here you will find the Copenhagen City Hall which features an ornamented front, the gilded statue of Absalon just above the balcony and the tall, slim clock tower.

The square is a great meeting point if you are in a group and a good photo op spot as it has beautiful statues. There’s also a good amount of restaurants nearby.

Strøget

Strøget is a pedestrian, car free shopping area in Copenhagen, Denmark. This popular tourist attraction in the centre of town is one of the longest pedestrian shopping streets in Europe at 1.1 km. Wear good walking shoes and go shopping! You’ll find from small souvenir shops to high-profile brand stores. We found a shop with the best pastries I’ve ever tasted in my life!

Church of Holmen

First built as an anchor forge the Holmen Church was later converted into a naval church by king Christian IV. The interior is impressive and it has beautiful wood work. Admission is free.

Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek

The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is a very impressive art museum in Copenhagen. It has lots of marble sculptures. Entrance is free on Tuesdays and there are cafes available inside.

Rosenborg castle

This 400-year-old Renaissance castle was built by Christian IV. It has great exhibits with cool antiques and lots of impressive paintings. When you visit this castle it’s like traveling back in time. The gardens are free to visit and are perfect for a picnic.

The Royal Library

It is among the largest libraries in the world and the largest in the Nordic countries. While sightseeing you will enjoy the architectural work which combines a new building blended perfectly with an old one. If you take a good look you might see it looks like a ship!

Tower Church of our Savior

The Church of Our Saviour is a baroque church in Copenhagen, Denmark, most famous for its black and golden helix spire with an external winding staircase which turns four times counterclockwise around it. If you are not afraid of the heights you will get a great view of the city if you climb the tower.

Gefion Fountain

The Gefion Fountain is a large fountain on the harbour front in Copenhagen, close to The Little Mermaid statue. It features a large-scale group of animal figures being driven by the Norse goddess Gefjon. This makes an awesome photo opportunity!

Nyboder

This row of small houses is a historic district which was planned and first built by king Christian IV to accommodate a need for housing for the personnel of the rapidly growing Royal Danish Navy and their families. There’s a legend that says that when the sailors went out to the sea the wives would light up the lanterns to let their lovers know they were available.

Toldboden Royal Pavillions

Located at Toldboden in Copenhagen harbor, close the royal residence you will find the two small pavilions used by the Royal Family, when going aboard the royal yacht.

Pro Tips:

  • We purchased tickets for the city sightseeing bus and it was a great decision. It allows you to choose the routes and landmarks that you want to see. It’s especially useful if you don’t have much time.
  • Wear good walking shoes and layers of clothes.
  • There are many good restaurants in Copenhagen. One of our family traditions is to have a meal at the Hard Rock Cafe where there’s one. This one was great! I loved the food, the decor & vibes and the customer service. It’s also centrally located and you have the option to seat outside if the weather is nice.

We hope you enjoyed this tour through my favorite Copenhagen highlights. Drop a comment and let me know which one is your favorite! If this article has inspired you, please share it with your friends and Pin it for later! For more things to do in other European destinations check these posts!
