Best Mom Tips for Family Photo Shoots

When it comes to family portraits, all of us mamas want everything to go perfect. After all it’s our way of capturing family memories that will last forever. But sometimes it can be overwhelming.

What to wear? What’s the best time to schedule a photo shoot? How to choose a good photographer? How do I get kids to cooperate throughout the process?

These are common questions you might have asked yourself before. I know I have!

So, for this article I’ve teamed up with Sacramento based professional photographer Malina Spearman and together we’ve come up with these tips that I’m sure will help you have peace of mind while preparing for your next family photo session.

1. When selecting your outfits, choose clothes you feel beautiful as well as comfortable with. If you feel good you will look good!

Avoid logos or characters. Go for classic looks. This will make your pictures timeless.  Remember there’s no need to match everyone’s clothes but do try to keep a color pallet or a theme. We chose a white and jeans theme and it worked out really well.

2. If your location is outdoors, take into consideration the best times to leverage on the sun light.

One hour after sunrise or one hour before sunset will provide you with the best natural light. We booked our session for 6pm (Sunset was expected for 7:30pm).

3. Do your homework.

If you are not used to be in front of the camera you might feel awkward, with no idea on what to do or how to pose. We strongly recommend to do some research. Go to Google Images or Pinterest and choose examples of pictures you like. Send them to your photographer to provide a clear idea of what you’re looking for.

4. Communication is key.

Choose a photographer you have chemistry with. Someone you feel comfortable asking questions and communicating your concerns. I have to say Malina was great at this! We had a very open communication prior to the photo session and she was very kind and patient during the shooting, not only with me but also with my kids.

5. If you have toddlers…

Feed them before the photo shoot and bring non-messy snacks. You know what will happen if they are hungry. Allow time for a nap if your session is in the afternoon. They will be more likely to cooperate if they are well rested.

Set clear expectations. Explain what you’ll be doing, what they can expect and what you expect from them. Offer a reward if they behave. I told my girls they’d have ice cream after the photo session but only if they cooperated. It worked like magic.

Let them have fun! Spontaneous and authentic pictures are the best.
